Canadian Medalists at the IPF Worlds-Open Men
By: Alex Mardell
Date: April 21, 2009

How many Open medals have the Canadian Men won at the IPF Worlds? How many people besides Bill Jamieson can answer this question off the top of their head? I posed a similar question to Jeff Becker at the 2009 Nationals in Moose Jaw, SK this year as I wondered if any Canadian (Male) has ever won an overall gold medal. He responded by telling me Rick Crilly in 1986. I quickly repeated by asking who is that? Did you know?

I feel the CPU could do a better job at acknowledging the past medalists at the IPF worlds. I think it would be a nice reminder of how we as Canadians have fared over the years against the worlds best. A link to our international results is necessary without someone having to comb through the IPF results page.

As a collective Canadian Men who have competed in the Open IPF Worlds have amassed 30 medals: 19 overall, 8 individual discipline medals ie. Squat, Bench or Deadlift and 3 in Bench only.

Note: the respective individual medals did not become official until the 1997 Worlds.

Overall Class Winners

  • 1997 Ed Brost- 125 Silver

  • 1995 Ed Brost 125 Bronze

  • 1995 Ralph Celio 110 Bronze

  • 1989 Vascol Simpson 67.5 Bronze

  • 1986 Rick Crilly 75 Gold

  • 1982 Roger Daggitt 110 Bronze*

  • 1982 Tom Magee 125+ Gold

  • 1981 Tom Magee 125 Silver

  • 1980 Jim Moir 67.5 Silver

  • 1980 Mauro DiPasquale 75 Silver**

  • 1979 Jim Moir 67.5 Gold

  • 1979 Mauro DiPasquale 67.5 Silver

  • 1979 Tom Campbell 90 Gold

  • 1978 Mauro DiPasquale 67.5 Silver

  • 1977 Jim Moir 67.5 Silver

  • 1976 Mauro DiPasquale 67.5 Gold

  • 1976 Tom Campbell 82.5 Bronze

  • 1975 Jim Moir 67.5 Silver

  • 1972 Howard Moreau 75 Silver

    * Canadian Ross Darnell who originally won bronze was DQ'd-as per Grant Armour.

**Mauro DiPasquale won a gold medal at the 1981 World Games in the 75 kgs weight class.

There have been a total of 5 overall gold medalists as the last one was in 1986. I was going to add their respective totals and overall wilks to the list but figured it was irrelevant to the successes of these individuals. An IPF overall medal is with that person forever despite if it was a particularly lean year or happened through doping disqualifications etc. An IPF gold medal in any year whether its 1982, 1986 or 2012 is the same thing.

Individual Lift Medals (sq, b, or dl)

  • 1997 Ed Brost 125 Silver deadlift (silver overall)

  • 1997 Mark Giffin 100 Bronze bench

  • 2003 Lewis Noppers Bronze deadlift

  • 2005 Greg Doucette 82.5 Bronze bench

  • 2005 Darrin Weatherbie 100 Bronze bench

  • 2008 Lewis Noppers 67.5 Bronze deadlift

  • 2008 Jeff Butt 90 Bronze bench

  • 2008 Alex Mardell 125 Gold Bench

It seems as a whole the Canadian Men are prominently better benchers than in any other discipline as 5 out of the 8 medals are in the bench.

    Bench only IPF Worlds

  • 1997 Ed Brost 125 Silver

  • 1997 Yves Bedard 56 Silver

  • 2006 Shawn O'Halloran 125 Silver
